Spot the Peppermint Pig throughout the Holiday House Tour & be entered to win a NBPS membership & your very own Peppermint Pig !

The peppermint pig, a Victorian tradition, was a symbol of good health, happiness, and prosperity. Traditionally, the peppermint pig was passed around the holiday table inside a red velvet pouch. Each person would share something good from the past year, and then take a turn hitting the pouch with a small hammer to break the peppermint pig. Once around the table, the pouch was opened and the pieces of the peppermint pig were shared by all. The sharing of the peppermint pig was thought to bring good health and luck in the New Year.
The New Bedford Preservation Society adopted the peppermint pig as the mascot of the Society’s scholarship fund. All profits of peppermint pigs purchased through the Society contribute to the scholarship fund, named in remembrance for former Society member and preservationist, Louis O. St. Aubin, Jr.
Louis O. St. Aubin, Jr. was a founding member of the Society and was the current President when he passed away. He was active with our annual house and cemetery tours. As a member of the Waterfront Area Historic League (WHALE), he was committed to the original restoration of the historic district.
Mr. St. Aubin was the owner of Brookside Antiques on North Water Street in New Bedford; a noted glass historian and expert on Mt. Washington Glass, and the author of a book on Pairpoint Lamps. He was a founder of the former New Bedford Glass Museum, the New Bedford Glass Society, and the Society of New Bedford Glass and Fine Arts. He was a founder and Past President of the Mt. Washington Art Glass Society.
Mr. St. Aubin was a goodwill ambassador for the city of New Bedford, convincing many people to purchase and refurbish old homes. He had a love and passion for New Bedford, its history, its architecture, and its contribution made to the worldwide glass industry. Through the purchase of a peppermint pig, you are cultivating the education and passion of historic preservation that Louis O. St. Aubin, Jr. epitomized.
